In 2015 Coles had the opportunity to provide a full compliment of design services to upgrade both the normal and emergency standby electrical services at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. This exciting project required installation and synchronization of a new 750kW generator with existing backup power systems, installation of a new 2MW unit substation from existing 13.8kV distribution, the relocation of the existing oil tanks supplying the existing generator sets, and a 3500 ft² addition off of the hospital’s electrical room to accommodate all this new electrical equipment. This project required a high level of coordination, management and commissioning to avoid disruptions to critical health care services and day-to-day operations throughout the hospital. Construction was completed and the new electrical systems were brought fully online in the Fall of 2017.
